The shots below are all taken during my early morning snorkel trips near the rocks right off of Polo Beach.

The pics don't look all that great because its difficult to get close to the fish and find them in the viewfinder. Trust me, the snorkeling is very good there, the fish are just a little smaller than one would see out near Molokini and there are many species in these waters. It's like swimming in an aquarium!

If you snorkel here (or anywhere on Maui, for that matter) you should try to get out early. The winds are lighter which makes the water calmer. Its not much fun (and can be dangerous) to snorkel near rocks where 4 foot waves are crashing.

Also, if you go to Maui and think you'll snorkel more than once or twice, consider renting equipment for a week or so at one of the many places. It's cheaper in the long run. I went to the Maui Dive Shop in Kihei, a 10 minute drive from Wailea, and rented an optical mask (as I wear glasses), a quality snorkel and fin set, and a boogie board for $45 / week. They have an excellent FREE dive guide that lists all the good snorkel spots from the shore. I also got a coupon for a free snorkel boat trip out to Molokini (a $35 value). You can get gear cheaper elsewhere but you'll enjoy it more if you get good gear- avoid the $1.99 a day outfitters.
