A bad day at golf beats a good day at work anytime. I had the chance to play one of the most beautiful courses on Maui--The Emerald.

I'm a pretty high handicapper (25 or so) and I was nervous about hacking the place up and embarrassing myself. Not so on this course. Rough? What rough? I only lost 2 or 3 balls the entire round and that was only because I did not want to hold up play by looking for them.

The views are impeccable, heavily landscaped and flowered grounds,  views of the ocean on nearly every hole.

I spent just as much time gawking and taking pictures as I did concentrating on my game.

The greens fees were $130 plus $35 to rent clubs. Worth it in my book to play at a course of this caliber. Plus, the rental clubs are Callaway Big Bertha XJ-14's. I'll probably never get to play a round with clubs like those again so I felt it was worth it not to drag my sticks from home. Just bring your shoes and some balls and you'll be all set.

The advice given to us by the pro shop to help read the greens was that the ball will always roll towards the ocean. What do you do when the ocean is on three sides of you? I three putted nearly every green....

The sand traps (the 18th is pictured below) are filled with the same white powdery stuff as the beaches. Not at all difficult to get up and out from.

A pond guards the shared green at the 13th. No, I did not end up putting any balls in the drink.

I signed up as a single and was paired up with a great guy from Texas named Ross. We both took turns taking endless pictures of each other.

My final score for those who are interested--106. And yes, I did count penalty strokes and every three-putt. I have got to work on my putting...
