Some of our
most memorable moments were in El
Centro (downtown) on the Malecon.
The Malecon is downtown Puerta Vallarta’s “main drag” – a great
place to rest on a wrought iron bench and view sculpture, people watch,
and check out the ocean.
Arcos Theater marks the southern end of the Malecon. |

Great bars, restaurants, and shopping line the non coastal side of the Malecon. When you’re there, be sure to stop by Carlos O’Briens for a yard or two of margueritas and their entertaining staff. The Zoo is another hot spot just a block or so away. We saw a guy dressed in a full gorilla suit running around town and assume he was promoting the Zoo. A young, hip crowd with live music, good food and fairly cheap drinks. | ||||||||||

Many
unique and original sculptures can be found along the Malecon.
Each has an interesting history behind it. Three nautically themed
sculptures are of particular interest:
Neptune y Serena (Nepture
and the Mermaid), La
Fuente de los Delfines (Fountain of the Dolphins), and
Caballito de Mar (The Seahorse) which has become an unofficial Puerto
Vallarta landmark.
Click each of the images below for more details about the sculpture. |

La Nostalgia is a beautiful sculpture created by Ramiz Barquet of the silhouette of a man and a woman. Inspired by love for his wife Nelly, the two figures gaze off toward the ocean and ponder life in Puerto Vallarta. It is said to be placed at the very site where the Barquet's came to watch the sunset in solitude and reflection. At night special lights that reflect its patina illuminate the famous monument. |
